Multiple computers

Hi,

I just installed the latest update of your software and noticed that it doesn't carry over program settings from one computer to the next. This could have caused problems due to the fact that the manual suffix setting was in there as well. Do you have any suggestions for using your software on multiple computers?? I think it would be good to have all the settings stored in the database instead of a settings file locally on the computer.

Just my 2 cents.

Nathan,

What if you did a back-up and then opened it on the new computer?  I do this for clients; but I have noticed sometimes it doesn't keep all the settings.

Not sure if you are thinking of the same thing I am. I pull up SM at my desk but also at the Order Entry desk. Eventually as our enterprise expands I will need multiuser capacity and an order entry module but we are still a bit away from that. The problem is that when you install the program it doesn't keep all the settings in the database and thus keeps a .set file locally for program settings. This causes problems as I have to update each settings on both computers (and hopefully not forget to change both).

Nathan,

Check out the following post.  It will explain how to make sure the settings are the same.

I was also thinking multiple user environment. I think the main file should be on the server to access. But I am not sure if two computer can open the same file at the same time? Is it possible David?

Ahsan,

Currently you can open the file on more than one computer simulatneously, but only the first one to open it has read/write permissions.  Others can view it and click "Reread from File" to import changes from the read/write instance, but any changes they make will not be able to be written into the same file.  (You can save it to another filename).

We intend to add multi-user support since many users are interested in this.  We hope to have that ready within the next year sometime.

Thanks,

That's great news. We should need this functionality by then. I imagine you will implement a pricing structure similar to Quickbooks (the multiple seat license).

Nathan,

We haven't yet worked out the pricing structure.  It will be simple and affordable regardless of how it solidifies.

Thanks!

Hi Guys..

I read through the post about moving the SM to a new computer and it's fairly straight forward.

The only issue we encounter is that if we decide to change any of the settings within SM on Computer "A", computer "B" or "c" will not reflect those changes unless we manually update the changes.

Another little "gotcha" I have found is that by storing the invoices and other "reports" locally on each machine can cause a little confusion when operating from multiple machines.

A good example was something that happened last week, I was asked to modify an invoice template and didn't even think about copying the new template to the other computers and ran into a couple of problems as the invoices were not consistent..

My latest workaround for the invoice templates is that i am just going to place them on a file server and point everyone's SM file to that location.  As for the "set" file, I am thinking about simply having that file replicate from each machine and ensure that that are always in-sync (so to speak) - similar to DFS replication.

As for the multi-user access, I think it is a great idea and definitely needed. We run into this problem on a daily basis when processing orders and or updating orders.

Hi Eric,

Yes you are correct as I see the same things happening. I was going to setup a File Server but have decided to just keep everything on one computer for right now. As we grow we now have one dedicated person to take care of the order entry. Which is also going to have less mistakes.

Another quick work around in lieu of implementing a file server would be to simply share your SM folder on your computer..

Not sure about your level of technical experience but if you are not familiar with Virtual Machines, i would highly recommend you look into this technology..   It makes deploying servers and or Windows XP machines for software evaluations a breeze..

If you want more info on it, send me a PM and i would be happy to elaborate..  My background is network engineering..  I can barley use MS Word or excel, but networks, file servers, exchange etc is no problem.. I do them in my sleep..

Eric, Nathan,

Yes - that would be an approach to sharing the same .set file - you could run the executable from the remote computer.  As long as the directory where the .exe file is located is shared and you have installed SuperManager on the other machines (to make sure all the libraries are also available on that computer) you should be able to run the .exe from another computer.  You can just change the path of the shortcut on the other computers to link to the .exe on the "main" computer.

And - from before - it is the best approach to share templates by having them in a network location that shares a common path on all computers.  (Ex: All computers map a Z:\, where the smg and all the templates are stored)

Thanks,
David
